Under the Influence:
Using Pinterest

modern glamour boston boudoir

Allana Taranto of Modern Glamour  in Boston, MA
is sharing with us how you can use Pinterest to maximize your boudoir shoot!

With less time in my life, I find myself going down the Pinterest rabbit hole with less frequency than I used to.  However, when I can, I like to scroll through my own boards, remembering what I pinned, and discovering new pins others have added to my arsenal of inspirational images.

Here’s an example of an image that I found and pinned to my Boudoir Inspiration: Glamazon board.   A bridal boudoir client came in last weekend and brought in a pair of gorgeous high waisted black lace knickers. This image immediately came to mind.

I didn’t want to create a duplicate, or clone, of course.  But it was the seed of an idea.

The original pin is a page from an old issue of Marie Claire.
Not sure how to hunt down the photographer for proper attribution as I can’t make out the year of the issue.

This was my take on the idea.  Instead of layers of jewelry and pattern, we sent simple with just black lace and the one important piece of jewelry – the engagement ring.  I’ve been finding it a fun challenge to incorporate the engagement ring in bridal boudoir in creative ways.

There are so many different ways to look and feel beautiful; to be outrageously sexy.

Pinterest is an elegant (and addictive) tool for visual organizing. When planning a boudoir session, you can use it to find and assemble images, wardrobe and quotes and women that inspire you.  There are so many different ways to look and feel beautiful; to be outrageously sexy. Pinterest can help you edit all those ideas down to the right ones for you.  When a client shares an inspiration board with me before the boudoir session, I can immediately understand what kind of boudoir shoot she is planning and hoping for.  Then, using that board as a launch point, we can create her dream shoot together.

I’ve started a few boards – a few (of the many) archetypes of female beauty.  You can use any of these Boudoir Style Inspiration boards as a beginning, or if you are inspired you create, name and build  your own boudoir inspiration board.

Here are a few tips as your use Pinterest to plan your boudoir shoot:

1. DISCOVER THE STYLE OF BOUDOIR YOU LOVE

Pinterest, and the internet as a whole, is a great place to start doing research.  There are many types of boudoir. Pinup, glamour, fitness, etc.  What feels right for you?  Then find a photographer whose work reflects that style.  You might not initially have the right vocabulary for what you are looking for, but you will know it when you see it.

2. ORGANIZE WARDROBE FOR YOUR BOUDOIR SHOOT

Wardrobe for boudoir shoots goes way beyond bras and underwear.  There’s shapewear, sleepwear, corsets, boy shorts, slips, robes, bodysuits, hosiery – the list can go on.  Search for styles and options that reveal the parts you love about your body.   My board Operation: Lingerie (the colon here is critical, it’s not lingerie for operations!) is the main Modern Glamour Pinterest board for beautiful things that you can wear for a boudoir photography shoot.

3. SHARE YOUR BOARD WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Pinterest, as a tool, is great for mapping out your inspirations.  Often, when looking at a client’s board, I can see what style of shoot she wants.  From there, I can choose what backgrounds, and props we need to make that dream shoot happen.  As visual artists, photographers can read and translate in words and into the shoot itself what a client is looking for.

Most of my clients get an album with their boudoir session. An album, which by it’s nature is narrative, is the perfect place for a story to unfold.  In a story there’s a beginning, middle and and end. That means we want to create a variety in wardrobe, lighting and backgrounds. Is there a story behind the images that can emerge when they are in a sequence?

modern glamour boston boudoir

Remember:

We won’t create an exact replica of another photographer’s image. And we don’t want to. Your shoot is about you.  We will use your Pinterest board as a seed of inspiration to make our own amazing images.

The whole boudoir experience is a process of accepting and loving yourself.

You can read the original blog post on Allana’s website here.

Allana, thank you so much for sharing your insight into utilizing Pinterest, and also allowing use to see some of your work!  We absolutely love using Pinterest as well, not only to showcase our current lingerie wardrobes to our client, but to also encourage them to gain inspiration for their shoots – you can check our our boards right here!   It is so important to remember Pinterest is just a tool, not a standard! You are your own unique beauty, rock it!

Editorial Boudoir | Chris & Becca Photography | Invest in Your Boudoir Photography

By | Editorial Shoots, Inspiration | No Comments

Do you have a wishlist of things you want to buy that seems to be always growing?
Some may be personal, fun items and others are for your business.
But sometimes it can be hard to pick when it’s the right time to spend some hard earned money on yourself.
Maybe you should consider that it’s time to invest in your boudoir photography.

I’m Chris, part of the husband and wife team, Chris and Becca Photography. My wife and I spend a good amount of time talking about where we should be putting funds for our business and for fun. But the one thing we never have to ask each other about is spending money on education and self-improvement. My wife knows that I wouldn’t want her to hesitate before getting anything she believes would help her become a better boudoir photographer or business owner.

Hartford Connecticut Boudoir Photographer

I’ve purchased a lot of courses, e-books, audiobooks, and apps over the years. And yeah, sure, some of those books – I don’t even know where they are right now, but they were important to my growth when I first got them.
And nothing is more valuable than investing in yourself!

So if you’ll humor me for just one moment, allow me to explain why you should trust me…
Becca and I are internationally featured and award winning photographers
who focus on destination weddings and CT Boudoir Photography.
We’ve been flown all around the world and we love just about every second of it!
Let me tell you the single biggest reason we’ve had the success.  It’s because we weren’t scared to invest in ourselves and change for the better.

Hartford Connecticut Boudoir Photographer

CHANGE is such an important part of that. Actually practicing the business and photographic lessons you learn makes all the difference. Quite frankly, you can jump past other photographers who are shooting the same thing the same way every weekend and not sure why their “practice” isn’t making them better. Taking in new information and perspectives is key to finding exactly what your best photography looks like.

Initially, I had to learn to act and not wait too long. Just because you might not memorize all 1500 boudoir poses doesn’t mean you should hesitate to buy it. Don’t wait for the perfect time when your schedule is perfectly free, because then it will never happen. The important thing is to look to add even just 1 pose to your arsenal and commit to an attitude of always improving.

The best thing about going all in and investing in the business education materials on your wishlist is
that you’ll
start to notice how many more things on your wishlist you can soon afford!

Don’t wait for the perfect time when your schedule is perfectly free,
because then it will never happen!

Chris, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on how important it is to invest in yourself and in your business!  It’s so important that we never stop learning.

EDITORIAL BOUDOIR | An outdoor boudoir shoot by THE BOUDOIR DIVAS

By | Editorial Shoots, Hair & Makeup, Lingerie & Styling | No Comments

A photo shoot by Marissa Boucher of The Boudoir Divas, one of the founders of Boudoir International. Follow her on instagram @marissa.boucher

We took it outdoors not too long ago with a shoot styled by the amazing Feathers and Fox for our client Heather. Living in San Diego has it’s perks for sure, in that we have all the benefits of the climate and landscape of gorgeous ranch like Mexico and we are happy to take advantage. This was done close to the border on a friend’s ranch. We wanted to go forward with a very strong theme, being that we are obsessed with the music festival vibe, it seemed perfect. Peggy took quite a bit of time doing a fitting with Heather, helping her pick out and decide which pieces would be the best for the look we were going for.

Then add this location we fell in love with, sunset and purple mountains majesty, and WHAM! Gorgeous images. It’s easy to see why we are falling more and more in love with outdoor boudoir photography shoots.

If you are a member of Boudoir International and would like to submit images from a boudoir shoot for our blog, please choose 15-25 images and send to info@theboudoirdivas.com with a write up about the shoot.

Fall Editorial | Nathan Larimer | Petaluma Boudoir Photographer

By | Editorial Shoots | No Comments

Boudoir-Editorials3
This styled bridal boudoir session, shot by Nathan Larimer, was photographed in the mountains above Lake Tahoe, California. For this shoot, Nathan wanted to “take a bride and place her in a scenic location where she could focus on expressing her sexuality and beauty.” We think it’s perfect for the change in seasons and love the natural element. Read more about Nathan’s shoot below.

Nathan Larimer

Model: Kaila Uli
Hair/Makeup Artist: Hair styled by Colette Burrows, makeup done by Kat Louis, and wardrobe styled by Jessica Thompson. The vintage wedding gown, antique lingerie, and accessories were provided by Recaptured Design and the freshwater pearl jewelry was provided by Lucia Antonelli.
What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept?
The original concept for the shoot was a “getting ready” scene with a bride. I specialize in weddings and most of my brides want pictures getting ready for their wedding, putting on makeup, and of course putting on their gown. I’ve always felt that moment always has such potential to be very intimate, emotional, and even sexy. Sometimes those shots are amazing, but often they fall short because of the anxiety and clutter that often comes from preparing for such a huge event. With this shoot I wanted to take a bride and place her in a scenic location where she can focus on expressing her sexuality and beauty.
How would you describe your typical style, was this a departure or were you playing into your typical inspiration?
This was the first time that I ever did a styled boudoir shoot. In the past, I have only done real boudoir. I felt I wanted to do this particular shoot to express my vision the way I wanted to instead of the way a client wants me to. So in one way, it was a departure because my inspiration came from my own experiences as opposed to the same 10 pictures my clients always share with me on Pinterest. However, this shoot still embodies a soft, sophisticated, sensual feel like much of my work.
If you could choose the most important pieces of the styling or set in your images that you would say set the tone for the whole shoot what would they be?
The eyes. Eyes always set the tone in all of my shoots. My boudoir photography always finds the women styled sexy, but the most important thing is that I am still photographing them for who they are. Therefore, I rely on her eyes to express emotion as much or more than her wardrobe. In other words, we style the shoot for her body, but I shoot for her eyes.
Photographers always know that nothing goes to plan in a editorial shoot where there are so many elements that have to come together, overcoming them and still getting killer images is what makes us pro. 🙂 What challenges did you face?
This shoot was at about 8,000 feet on a mountain pass. I scouted this location the previous October and the weather was about 75-80 degrees and the Aspen leaves were at the height of their fall color. When we did the shoot on the same day a year later, it had snowed the night before. In some of the pictures you can even see a few patches of the white stuff in the background. The temperature at the beginning of the shoot was about 60 degrees but got into the low 50’s with a breeze by the end. The models had to do a few jumping-jacks.
Describe the setting of the shoot/location, and how it inspired you:
Many of my clients come to an initial consult thinking that they want to shoot in a hotel room, bedroom, or studio. But we rarely do once I show them pictures like these. I found this place while working on a personal project documenting carvings by shepherds on Aspen trees. Because of the many personal fine art projects I work on, I am able to find locations that my clients would never know existed. Scenic boudoir needs to be something more than a random field at sunset and this place has it.
Just for fun: Did you create a mood board? If so, would you be willing to send it/share it with us?
I don’t have a mood board for this shoot, but here’s a link to a totally different non-boudoir project I shot in the same location. Check it out. It’s fun to see the contrast in styles. http://nathanlarimer.com/work-in-progress-arborglyphs/
Would you want to recreate this shoot for your clients? Or was this a one-of-a-kind original?
I would love to recreate this for clients! It would be perfect for a bride and a couple friends looking for an adventure!

Agnes Fohn is one of our newest members to Boudoir International! She collaborated with model Dottie Mayfield for this Marilyn Monroe inspired shoot. See what she describes as “a breeze and such amazing inspiration. A perfect shoot!” A Boudoir Editorial with Agnes Fohn of Yellow Brick Collective in NYC

Collage 1
What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept?
Dottie and I had worked on a previous shoot together and I fell in love with her look right away! She possesses this amazing vintage spirit that I immediately was drawn to, so when she asked me to do a Marilyn inspired shoot a la Douglas Kirkland I just couldn’t refuse! This was one of my easiest and quickest shoots to date. We needed two things, a lovely model that can rock Marilyn (check!) and a white sheet (check!) This was shot on my living room floor and couch. Dottie really brought the spirit of Marilyn so we didn’t need much else!
Did you work with a stylist, or did you style all the outfits/accessories yourself?
Our stylist was Calvin Klein White Bedsheets!
How would you describe your typical style, was this a departure or were you playing into your typical inspiration?
My style tends to fluctuate between shoots. Depending on my models and the theme I could go really bright and airy or dark and moody. It all depends on what is in front of me. With this shoot we wanted to get that beautiful glowing morning look but also incorporate some edgier elements.
If you could choose the most important pieces of the styling or set in your images that you would say set the tone for the whole shoot what would they be?

Fancy sheets. Don’t just use any old sheets… make sure they are luxurious!
Describe the setting of the shoot/location, and how it inspired you:
I shot Dottie in my sun drenched studio on the floor, in the window and on the couch. We worked with very simple pieces so Dottie was bringing all the inspiration with her Marilyn vibe and gorgeous make-up that she did in about 15 minutes! The sun was absolutely perfect that day and just really gave her a beautiful glow.
Would you want to recreate this shoot for your clients? Or was this a one-of-a-kind original?
Absolutely! Who wouldn’t want to feel like Marilyn for a day?! Even if we recreate shoots at YBC they are still all going to have their own flavor because every woman brings something different and new to the table.

What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept?
With a movie hot on its heels, the infamous book, 50 Shades of Grey recently peaked with over 100 million copies sold. It’s no wonder then Boudoir photography has also reached an all time high in popularity. As an on trend groom’s gift and exquisite confidence booster, Boudoir is definitely the new black, or grey as it were.

There are few things in this world a woman can do to affect her inner presence–that small part of herself that is exhilarated when she knows she looks (and therefore feels) positively gorgeous. At dani fine photography, that really is what boudoir is all about. It is the glamorous and confidence-boosting experience of seeing one’s self in a different light…a very tasteful, yet sexy light; like the way Christian Grey sees Anastasia Steele. The exclusively female team at dani fine photography offers clients a completely private and guided session, “ We are a business for women, by women. Because of this, we are really in touch with what our clients want and need. We know how to make them look and feel fabulous. Boudoir really is a gift for yourself, if your partner also receives something ~that’s the icing on the cake!” To see more boudoir from dani fine photography, check out their website (http://www.daniphotography.com/) and Facebook page

Model:
Mikhayla

Hair/Makeup Artist:
makeup by M.A.C.

What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept?
Modern Pin-Up was most definitely the theme! I was inspired by a series of modern pin-up photos of Bar Rafaeli. http://www.hollyscoop.com/galleries/bar-refaeli-sassy-pin-photos
I liked that it wasn’t over done when it came to hair/makeup and sets. It really wanted to capture the Pin-Up look with a modern twist.

Did you work with a stylist, or did you style all the outfits/accessories yourself?
The styling was a collaboration of Mikhayla and myself. I’ve work with Mikhayla before and knew she had fabulous style. We met for a consultation prior to our shoot and planned out every detail of the shoot. We looked at Pinterest boards together for inspiration on makeup, hair, clothing, sets etc…. This also insured we were on the same page when it came to all of these things. It’s kind of like bringing a photo of a hairstyle you’d like the stylist to recreate vs. trying to explain your hairdresser this new style. A photo is worth a million words!

If you could choose the most important pieces of the styling or set in your images that you would say set the tone for the whole shoot what would they be?
The color RED! Red lipstick and heels where a must! Headbands were an essential part of the look. Cropped tops & high waisted bottoms were important parts for the wardrobe.

Photographers always know that nothing goes to plan in a editorial shoot where there are so many elements that have to come together, overcoming them and still getting killer images is what makes us pro. 🙂 What challenges did you face?
The laundry mat scene was probably the most challenging prior to the shoot. I was hoping it was not going to be busy and having good light! Fortunately, we shot on a weekday so it was quite. Just one lucky guy and his dog were there for all the fun! The front of the laundry mat was all windows so that worked out perfectly as well.

Describe the setting of the shoot/location, and how it inspired you:
I used a number of different locations for this shoot! The studio shots were done with natural window light on a GORGEOUS “Drop it Modern” background. The laundry mat really inspired me, I’ve been dying to shoot in one for quite some time and for this shoot, it was perfect! We also went to a soda shop called “LaLa’s” which added to the modern/vintage vibe.

Just for fun: Did you create a mood board? If so, would you be willing to send it/share it with us?
I have a Pin-Up mood board…..http://www.pinterest.com/maryjmurphy/pin-ups/

Would you want to recreate this shoot for your clients? Or was this a one-of-a-kind original?

I would most definitely do more Modern Pin-Up shoots. In fact, I’d like to make it a signature style. I’m not sure about recreating it exactly…….maybe portions of it. I think it’s best if someone wants to do a shoot like this to use it as inspiration, but then make it your own.

Thank you Mary, for sharing your editorial with us! If you’re in the Petaluma area and looking for a boudoir photographer, check out Mary Jean Murphy Photography!

Model: Allison

Hair/Makeup Artist: Artistry SpaSalon

What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept?
We just recently did a complete overhaul on our studio and needed to get images to show, so we asked Allison who works at the salon right beneath our studio. We loved her look and wanted to do something vintage inspired so she was the perfect choice! She did her own hair and makeup and looked absolutely stunning!!

Did you work with a stylist, or did you style all the outfits/accessories yourself?
We did everything ourselves with the help of a local bridal store, Arzelles. They let us borrow all the jewelry and veils.

Describe the styling of the shoot.
Honestly we went into this kind of blind! We work better that way 🙂 Must be the art school in us 🙂 We had the shoot on the books for quite a while, but with our schedules we didn’t have as much time as we would have liked to get everything together. The week before the shoot we hit up Nordstroms and lots of other places, but purchased the most from them. Again, Arzelle’s was a huge part in this bc the jewelry really made the whole thing come together. In the end, for the images you see, we actually didn’t use anything we bought at all! We started playing around with Jen’s Grandmothers vintage robe, high waisted undies and the fabulous jewelry and wa-lah! They turned out to be our most fave images from the whole session 🙂 Also, the black robe images are Eberjey borrowed from a local boutique Emmaline.

How would you describe your typical style, was this a departure or were you playing into your typical inspiration?
Vintage, classic, modest, natural, soft, girly, romantic 🙂 We absolutely love Elizabeth Messina and get a lot of our inspiration from her!

If you could choose the most important pieces of the styling or set in your images that you would say set the tone for the whole shoot what would they be?
The jewelry and the studio! We are so proud of our new look and no one around us is doing boudoir like we are. We want to be different and totally US, and we feel like we have finally gotten there!

Photographers always know that nothing goes to plan in a editorial shoot where there are so many elements that have to come together, overcoming them and still getting killer images is what makes us pro. 🙂 What challenges did you face?
Fit. We didn’t have our model come with us when shopping, so we just had to choose what we thought would work best. This comes back to why we also just started plaything with things we had, and they ended up being our best images. So the key is to just play and have lots of things to choose from!

Would you want to recreate this shoot for your clients? Or was this a one-of-a-kind original?
Would love to recreate it and have already had some many new inquiries from this shoot alone.

Thanks so much, Jen & Ann, for letting us show off this gorgeous editorial shoot! If you live in the Franklin, TN area, and are looking for a boudoir photographer, please contact these ladies! Also be sure to visit their portfolio page & their website.

What was your overall vision for the shoot, or – how did you decide to shoot this concept? The overall vision of this concept was to create soft and sensual images featuring glamorous lingerie. The lingerie was selected for it’s

Did you work with a stylist, or did you style all the outfits/accessories yourself? garments were selected by myself.

Describe the styling of the shoot Victoria’s Secret

How would you describe your typical style, was this a departure or were you playing into your typical inspiration? My typical boudoir shooting style is reflected in this shoot. I heavily rely on available light rather than using flash or strobe. I find images come out softer and dreamier than when using flash. This shoot was also done using a mixture of digital and film mediums.

Photographers always know that nothing goes to plan in a editorial shoot where there are so many elements that have to come together, overcoming them and still getting killer images is what makes us pro. 🙂 What challenges did you face?
Challenges faced in this shoot was finding the model herself. Since this was an editorial shoot the garments had been gathered before hand. The first model I originally had planned to use had to cancel on short notice so I had to scramble to find someone that fit the vision and the garments.

Describe the setting of the shoot/location, and how it inspired you: The shoot took place in a warehouse studio location. The location has brick walls which are painted white and offers lots of natural window light. The studio also had a nice selection of vintage furniture available as well as a sheer white partition which added depth when shooting through.

It was a chilly fall morning when we took Peggy (our gorgeous and talented hair and make-up artist!) to the outskirts of San Diego for a just-for-fun outdoor boudoir photo shoot. Pegs was recently hitched, so we took this opportunity to snap some shots of her in her beautiful, vintage wedding day garb with our own boudoir twist!
